Historic Downtown New Bern

A successful revitalization effort has made downtown New Bern attractive to new residents and visitors alike. The Historic District, with homes dating back to the late 1700's still has many jewels waiting to be brought back to life. There are those that are large, almost palatial, with beautiful garden areas and others that can be best described as neat bungalows. Additionally, condos and townhomes are available in the downtown area which includes multi-zoned areas allowing residential and commercial uses.

The small town charm is enhanced by the variety of shops, galleries, restaurants, historic homes and churches. The New Bern Civic Theatre, New Bern Convention Center and Tryon Palace offer many cultural diversions throughout the year.

Ghent

The newest of New Bern's historic districts, Ghent, was admitted to the National Register in 1983. Private homes date from 1913 to World War II in this former trolley car suburb established in the days when working folks wanted homes away from the hustle and bustle of downtown New Bern, at most three miles away. It is now extremely popular because it is almost in the downtown historic district, and on the edge of the mall/restaurant/shopping explosion happening nearby.

In recent years, Ghent has become a highly desirable section of New Bern for homeowners and has undergone a great deal of sprucing up. Bungalow and cottage style homes with neat lawns make up a large part of the neighborhood. Some residences feature antebellum column fronts, and many have open or screened porches for those wonderful summer evenings.

The neighborhood is close to the YMCA, which includes a swimming pool, gymnasium, weight rooms and a racquetball court and offers day care and exercise classes and is fortunate to be situated between Fort Totten Park, which has a baseball field with bleachers, and the larger Lawson Creek Park, a popular fishing spot with nature trails, boat launches and picnic tables. Prices from $78,000.

Trent Woods

Large and mature, Trent Woods lies between New Bern and the Trent River. It is incorporated giving residents control over their neighborhoods, and there is virtually no commercial development within its borders. Winding, azalea-lined streets lead you to some of the poshest homes in Craven County. But there are also many ranch style family and retiree-type homes. Elegant townhomes have been added to this mix. Prices from $150,000.

Riverbend

Riverbend, a town on the southern border of New Bern, has about 1200 homes that wind among lakes and canals, many of which have water frontage and private boat slips. The land was originally owned by the Odd Fellows, a fraternal group of black tenant farmers raising tobacco. During the recession of 1914, they were forced to sell their land and in 1965 the area's potential as a retirement development was recognized.

The Riverbend Golf Club includes a well-stocked pro shop, snack bar, outdoor swimming pool and four lighted tennis courts. The development consists mainly of single-family dwellings, most with attached or detached one and two-car garages. Clusters of townhouses and duplexes have been added to the community. Priced from $137,000.

Fairfield Harbour

This expansive gated golfing and boating community is located across the Neuse River-a 15 minute drive. The 3,000-acre resort development features a large canal system giving many residents water access at their back doors. Northwest Creek also flows into this community providing the alternative of a home on a natural waterway. Boaters praise this neighborhood because of it's easy access to the Neuse River, which leads to the Intracoastal Waterway.

The development is a combination of single-family homes, condominiums, townhouses and timeshare condos. Lots may be wooded, on one of the two 18-hole golf courses, or on a canal with a dock. Several lots are available. Condominiums and townhouses at Fairfield Harbour are arranged around small man-made lakes. Winding paths and roads connect all locations, and the combination of layout and landscaping gives a feeling of privacy, even with neighbors only a few feet away. Homes priced from $124,000. Lots starting at $5,000 and condos from $115,000.

The Harbour's combination of year-round residents and vacationers insures that a wide variety of activities be available. Too numerous to list, they cover such interests as men's and women's golf, chorus, bridge and garden, drama, book, bridge, RV, tennis and yacht clubs. The community features two 18-hole golf courses, one indoor and three outdoor pools, nine tennis courts, four of which are lighted, a clubhouse with a restaurant, two pro shops and a marina and two dock areas on the premises.

Greenbriar

Greenbrier is a distinguished 700-acre subdivision in the middle of New Bern and is a neighborhood well-suited for families with young children and retirees. Lots range from an eighth of an acre to more than a full acre, and excellent architectural planning has effectively blended a variety of home styles into a delightful community. Many homes are of contemporary brick designs, and all utilities are underground.

The entire development surrounds an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Rees Jones. The clubhouse at The Emerald Golf Club at Greenbrier is often the chosen location for major local charity events and includes an Olympic-size, Z-shaped pool and four lighted tennis courts. Golf members can sharpen their skills on one of the finest new practice complexes in the state. From Greenbrier's front gate, you are within 2 minutes of major shopping, 5 minutes from the local schools and hospital, and adjacent to the campus of Craven Community College. Prices from $219,000.
